x86 kernel and browser demo

What I built

Unix-like x86 operating system with userspace, paging, terminals, and a browser demo.

Stack

C / x86 assembly / i686-elf-gcc / GRUB / QEMU / v86 / Next.js

Runtime

GRUB Multiboot entry loads GDT and stack, enters `kernel_main`, initializes subsystems, then enables scheduler.
Round-robin preemptive scheduler uses a 10-tick quantum for kernel threads and user processes.
Browser demo boots the same ISO in v86 with SeaBIOS/VGA BIOS preflight and a CRT-styled terminal shell.

Data model

Kernel code links at 1MB, heap spans 2-3.5MB, user space begins at 128MB, user stack sits below 3GB.
ELF binaries, ramfs nodes, 512-byte blocks, process table, virtual terminals, pipes, and signal state live in kernel memory.
Userspace programs compile to ELF, convert to C byte arrays, and embed into the initial ramfs.

Techniques

Two-level paging with copy-on-write fork and TLB invalidation points.
`int 0x80` syscall ABI with 23 syscalls for process, IO, filesystem, signals, pipes, cwd, and terminal control.
Ring 0 to Ring 3 transition through IRET and TSS-managed kernel stacks on interrupts.
4KB blocking circular pipes, Unix-style signals, foreground job routing, and Alt+F1-F4 virtual terminal switching.

Verification

Syscall surface covers fork/exec-style process control, IO, filesystem, memory, sleep/time, and terminal operations.
Copy-on-write paging coordinates page faults, frame ownership, and TLB flushes instead of copying every process address space eagerly.
Ring-3 user mode enforces isolation from ring-0 kernel code.
Circular pipe buffers track reader/writer references so blocking and EOF behavior are not just string queues.
