Ordered Reflection Systems in Cyclic Scales
A reproducible classification of exact word reversal in Messiaen's modes, with formal proofs, generated datasets, and a cyclic-scale tool.
Messiaen's modes of limited transposition are usually classified by how their pitch collections repeat under transposition. This paper studies a different object: the ordered interval word of each modal rotation and what happens when that word is reversed exactly.
The seven canonical modes divide into self-reflecting rotations, mirror pairs, or a mixture of both. The classification is finite and reproducible. A Lean artifact checks the seven results, while generated datasets expose the complete rotation and reversal maps.
The result is structural, not perceptual. It does not claim that reflection determines what listeners hear or that symmetry ranks musical quality. The maps are intended as compositional resources for modal alternation, multi-octave lifts, inversional pivots, and controlled scale generation.
